Exams: There will be three in-class exams and a cumulative final exam.  Calculators may not be permitted on some or all portions of each exam.

Exam Forgiveness Policy: All exams must be taken in class on the announced dates. If you take all three regular exams as scheduled, then the lowest one of the three scores will be replaced by your percentage score on the final exam, if this is to your benefit.

You will not be allowed to take any exam early or late for any reason. If you miss any of the three regular exams for any reason (even a really, really good reason), your percentage score on the final exam will serve as your score for the missed exam(s), and only the missed one(s) will be replaced.

Quizzes: Beginning February 10th, there will be a quiz every Tuesday unless there is an exam that week.  Your lowest two quiz grades will be dropped at the end of the semester. If you miss a quiz for any reason (even a really, really good one), that is one of the grades that will be dropped.  No makeup quizzes will be permitted.  Calculators may not be permitted on some or all portions of each quiz.

Homework: Homework assignments will be given each night. I will usually not collect the homework, but I reserve the right to do so. Your progress on the homework will be evident from your grades on the Homework Checks, Quizzes, and Exams.  Any collected homework assignment grades will either be included in the quiz grade or counted as extra credit.  For homework problems, you are welcome to use whatever technology you feel comfortable with (calculator, computer, slide rule, etc.) and are strongly encouraged to work with other students, come to homework help hours, and visit the math tutors.

Homework Checks: There will be several unannounced homework checks.  A full explanation of homework checks is on the following page.  Your lowest two homework check grades will be dropped at the end of the semester.  If you miss a homework check  for any reason (even a really, really good reason), that is one of the grades that will be dropped.  To prepare for the homework checks, it is strongly recommended that you keep an organized notebook of your homework.  No calculators will be allowed during a homework check.  More information on homework checks can be found here.

In-Class Worksheets and Group Work:  Much of the time during class you will be working in groups with other students on in-class worksheets.  I will usually not collect the worksheets, but I reserve the right to do so.

Class Participation:  Your class participation grade will be based on the contributions you make to the classroom learning environment.  Specific behaviors that will be counted positively include asking appropriate questions, active participation during group work, and not causing any distractions or disruptions that may interfere with other students' learning.  Each day you constructively participate I will record a +-mark for you at the end of the class.  Your class participation grade will be based on the percentage of ordinary class days in which you earn a +-mark.

Grading:

3 In-Class Exams
3 x 15 %
= 45 %
Final Exam   = 25 %
Quizzes
  = 15 %
Homework Checks

= 10%
Class Participation

= 5%
= 100 %
