CAREER CHANGE
Career change is a common occurrence today. It can be a life-changing
process to make the transition to a new occupation, field or industry.
You may be making a career change for any number of reasons. Some of the
common catalysts for career change are:
-
Quitting your job or being terminated.
-
Beginning a career after graduation.
-
Being dissatisfied in your current position.
-
A need to re-enter the work force after an extended absence.
To master this type of change you need to sharpen your skills, fine tune
your talents and pay a great deal of attention to ongoing personal development.
A positive mental attitude about change is pertinent. This means developing
a positive outlook in life that allows you to do anything you want to do
in any part of your life. Create an image of yourself as a winner, then
go out and win!
Nothing can stop the person with the right mental attitude from
achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the person achieve anything
with the wrong mental attitude. (Thomas Jefferson)
Some important steps to follow to prepare yourself for career change:
- Seek advice from professional/successful
people; find a support group.
-
Perform self assessment (soul
searching, personality and interest testing).
-
Set goals and specific objectives to help you reach those goals.
-
Make a master plan (tasks to be performed to achieve objectives).
-
Prepare your résumé and cover
letter; create an endorsement portfolio.
-
Research companies and industries of interest; the Internet
is a fantastic research vehicle.
-
Market yourself; demonstrate your personal power.
-
Interview: effectively communicate
your skills, abilities and qualifications to a company in need.
-
Negotiate employment, including salary, benefits, duties and responsibilities.
When you choose a job you love, you will never have to work a day
in your life. (Confucius)
