Assignments

Reflection Essays. Formal essays, typed, 3+ pages, in response to questions found on the Syllabus. Essay questions can be reached from links on the Schedule. They are due the day on which the questions are listed on the Schedule. [25 points]

Quizzes. Brief in-class essay or short-answer quizzes focusing on specific information from the readings (characters, scenes, incidents, etc.) and general concepts relating to the culture and literature of the Eighteenth Century. [10 points]

Conference Paper Components

Proposal. A 2-page introduction to the question you plan to write your paper on. You want to give enough background so that your reader can understand the question you hope to answer. Imagine that I am editing a literary journal and you want to get me interested in your article before you go to all the trouble of researching and writing it. [25 points]

Working Bibliography. A long list of possible secondary sources to be used in your Conference Talk and Scholarly Essay. This list will change over time as you add new items to it and drop those that don't prove useful. [10 points]

Introduction and Sentence Outline. A page or two of prose representing the opening of your paper, along with a sentence outline sketching our the rest of it. Copies with be exchanged with other students and me for discussion, leaving you (I hope) in a stronger position to draft your paper. [10 points]

Critical Essay. Formal essay in literary criticism, using primary and secondary sources, running ten or more pages, not counting notes & bibliography, suitable for presentation as a scholarly conference talk or as a short published article. [75 points]
