SAFE MISSION
SAFE is a growing group of Elmhurst College staff, administrators, and faculty working to encourage a culture in which people of all sexual orientations are treated equally. This organization seeks to foster greater awareness of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GLBT) issues on campus and in the larger community.
SAFE has established a clear focus since its development in Fall 1996. We believe that by listening, meeting, talking, and doing, we make it clear that we consider all people, regardless of sexual orientation, as equals. By forming a supportive community of students, staff, and faculty, SAFE represents the importance of inclusiveness and the need to support diversity on a personal and institutional level.
All Elmhurst College staff and faculty are invited to all SAFE meetings and events.
WHAT ARE SAFE GOALS?
The college experience consists of great change and growth. Students are confronted with a variety of issues that are dealt with differently in accordance with each student's own experience and maturity level. As these issues arise, a student who may be struggling with his/her sexual identity may have a more diffulcult task as a result. SAFE members understand this struggle and are available to give the support a student needs when dealing with the issues he or she encounters.
SAFE recognizes that our society continues to be filled with homophobia and prejudice. SAFE members strive to be a support not only to students, but also staff and faculty, who may be judged or ridiculed because of their sexual orientation.
