The LGBTQ community at Elmhurst College sponsors a rich array of events and activities throughout the academic year. Here's an overview of our most prominent annual events; for details and additional listings, check the College calendar.
William R. Johnson Guestship
This annual guestship focuses on speakers and issues of particular interest to the LGBTQ community. Past guestships have featured gay rights activist Harry Knox, publisher and editor Tracy Baim, historian John D'Emilio, author Michael Schiavi and columnist and author Dan Savage. The guestship is named in honor of the Reverend Dr. William R. Johnson '68, who was the first openly gay person in modern history to gain ordination to the mainstream Christian ministry.
The Big Queer Gathering
An annual event, the Big Queer Gathering welcomes LGBTQ students from area high schools for an evening of lectures, discussions, performances and more. Sponsored by QSA (Queer Student Association), the gathering is designed to extend a sense of community to LGBTQ teenagers while increasing awareness.
National Coming Out Day
Each fall, Elmhurst College observes National Coming Out Day with worship services, panel discussions and a campus-wide celebration. All members of the College community are invited to participate by "coming out" about any aspect of their lives.
Each year, the Elmhurst community celebrates Pride Week with educational and awareness programs focused on creating an inclusive community for all students.
