Major in Religion and Service

In today’s world, religiously motivated service from every tradition finds expression in careers and callings across the spectrum of human endeavors—in health care, social work, law, psychology, education, religious leadership, business, and much more. This program of study is designed for students across all religious traditions who want an exploration of the connections between religious commitments and service in relation to discerning their life’s work.

Requirements for the Major
Students who major in religion and service must successfully complete a minimum of nine courses:

  • Six academic religious studies courses, three of which must be REL 200 Introduction to Biblical Studies, REL 281 Serving Society: Faith Perspectives, and REL 240 World Religions: General Introduction (or a different course in a non-Christian religious tradition);
  • Two experiential courses from the department's internships or international study courses;
  • Department’s senior seminar

Experiential courses from academic departments outside the Department of Religious Studies may be acceptable with the consent of the department chair.
