Baccalaureate Degree Completion Option

for Registered Nurses

The Department of Nursing and Health Sciences baccalaureate program offers an option leading to the bachelor of science degree with a major in nursing for registered nurses who are graduates of associate degree nursing programs or hospital schools of nursing. This program is currently offered off-campus through the cohort model at partner hospitals through the Academic Partnership Program with the School for Professional Studies.

Admission Requirements
The RN/BS student must meet the following criteria for admission to the nursing program:

  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate institutions attended.
  • A minimum of 12 course units (48 hours) completed, with a transfer GPA of 2.75 or above.
  • A current, unencumbered license as a registered professional nurse in the State of Illinois.
  • Completion of a course equivalent to ENG 106 Composition II, PSY 210 General Psychology, PSY 315 Lifespan Development, BIO 107 and BIO 108 Human Anatomy, Physiology I, II with a grade of C or better, these courses must be recognized by Elmhurst College for transfer credit. 
  • Computer literacy as demonstrated by the Elmhurst College proficiency exam or equivalent course.

RN/BS Nursing Sequence
The nursing sequence consists of six required NRS course units that incorporate didactic and/or clinical practice: NRS 320, NRS 403, NRS 411, NRS 412, NRS 420 and NRS 421.

Required Support Courses
RN/BS students must complete the following:

  • BIO 449 Pathophysiology
  • MTH 345 Statistics or MTH 346 Statistics for Scientists or PSY 355 Statistics for Scientific Research (does not count as one of the two required units in mathematics)
  • PHL 316 Health Care Ethics or THE 332 Religion, Ethics and Healthcare
Additional Requirements
RN/BS students must meet the requirements of: 
  • The Elmhurst College Integrated Curriculum (ECIC)
  • The prerequisite courses for the baccalaureate degree and any other remaining credits not awarded in nursing or transfer credit to complete the 128 semester hours. It is recommended that these courses be completed prior to enrollment in Elmhurst College nursing courses, but they can be taken concurrently with ECIC courses. 

Academic Partnership Program
The Academic Partnership Program brings the College's degree completion for RNs program directly into hospitals throughout metropolitan Chicago. Students complete their entire curriculum at their own place of work. Cohorts have been held on-site at various hospitals including Elmhurst Hospital, Advocate Lutheran General, Advocate Christ, Advocate Good Samaritan, Advocate Illinois Masonic, Hinsdale Hospital and Gottleib Hospital.
