CBS 2 News Anchor Rob Johnson to Host Evening for Scholarships

Elmhurst College’s annual Evening for Scholarships celebrates the College’s commitment to making an Elmhurst education accessible to all of its students.

This year’s benefit will be held on Saturday, March 16, and will celebrate the College’s core values of intellectual excellence; community; social responsibility; stewardship; and faith, meaning and values. Speaking to the power of those values will be Elmhurst senior Scottie Williams, winner of the 2012 Gagliardi Trophy for his outstanding record as a football player and student; and Dan Zarlenga ’10, who founded the Global Poverty Club as an Elmhurst student, and who spoke at the College’s first scholarship dinner. Both will talk about how their Elmhurst Experience has shaped their lives.

The event will feature some exciting new elements. CBS 2 news anchor Rob Johnson will serve as the emcee, and the night’s festivities will include a live auction and Fund a Scholarship opportunities led by auctioneer Keith Jones of Sayre & Jones. Students in Elmhurst College’s jazz combo and woodwind ensemble also will perform. BMO Harris is the presenting sponsor of the Evening for Scholarships.

The need for student scholarships continues to be acute—96 percent of all students enrolled at Elmhurst in academic year 2011–2012 received some form of financial aid from the College. The Evening for Scholarships is the College’s premier fundraiser devoted solely to scholarships. Last year’s event raised a record-breaking $235,000, and 93 percent of that revenue went directly to supporting scholarships.

The goal this year is to raise $275,000, an amount that will represent a large percentage of all of the scholarship money that will be raised this year, said Joseph Emmick, vice president for development and alumni relations.

"A scholarship gift is one of the most important and rewarding gifts an Elmhurst College donor can make," he said. "It directly connects the donor with an individual student and fosters some of the most powerful and emotional relationships we see at the College. It makes possible the Elmhurst Experience for talented young men and women who may not be able to afford full tuition. Their success is a clear return on the investment in a scholarship fund."

The Fourth Annual Evening for Scholarships benefit will be held on March 16 in the Frick Center. The gala begins with a 6:00 p.m. cocktail reception and continues with dinner at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $200 per person, or $2,500 for table sponsors or Light of Knowledge Scholarship sponsors. Additional sponsorships also are available. To buy tickets, you may RSVP online or call the Office of Development and Alumni Relations at (630) 617-3407.
