MOTHER HICKS

By Suzan Zeder
Directed by Janice Pohl

Inspired by the WPA writers of the Great Depression who gath-ered local folklore, Zeder centers her play in southern Illinois, weaving together the lives of three outsiders—a foundling girl, a deaf boy, and the eccentric Mother Hicks, whom local gossip calls a witch. Theatrically rich with poetry and sign language, the play follows the journeys of these three to find themselves, and each other, in a troubled time.
