For students who are planning to teach at the middle-school level, we offer a middle school approval.* To meet State of Illinois requirements to earn this approval, students must complete the following courses in addition to the requirements for a secondary licensure major or a K-12 licensure area.

One of the following three options must be completed.

EDU 361/MTL 561 Understanding the Middle Level Learner

or

EDU 360/MTL 563 The Middle School: History, Philosophy, Organizational Structures and Best Practices and
PSY 318 Adolescent Development

or

EDU 360/MTL 563 The Middle School: History, Philosophy, Organizational Structures and Best Practices and
SPE/SEC 311 and one of the following: SPE 250, SEC 310, or KIN 440

Candidates who do not complete SPE/SEC 311 Educational Psychology at Elmhurst College must complete an additional course in adolescent psychology (EDU 361 or PSY 318). K-12 licensure candidates seeking middle school endorsements outside their area of concentration must also obtain middle school approval. All courses must be completed with a C (2.0) or higher.

*The Illinois State Board of Education requires that all candidates complete coursework for the present Middle Level Approval and have their Professional Educator License endorsement issued on or before January 31, 2018.
