School of Education Curriculum

Elmhurst University has established undergraduate teacher preparation requirements in three categories:

  • Integrated Curriculum: Courses that everyone must take for a bachelor’s degree.
  • Professional courses: Courses required for licensure.
  • Courses in subject area preparation: Courses in subject majors or specialization areas.

Admission to the University does not guarantee admission to a teacher licensure program.

Licensure as a teacher is allowable only after all of the requirements have been met, including passing scores on a subject specialty test and the edTPA.

All courses completed to meet licensure requirements must be three semester hours or more unless otherwise specified. In addition, all courses taken to meet licensure requirements, including general education courses applied to those requirements, must be completed for a grade of C- (1.7) or higher. Education courses must be completed within 10 years of admission to the program. Course requirements for specific licensure programs may be obtained by contacting major departments.

Field Experience Requirements

All licensure programs include field experience requirements. Elmhurst University requires a minimum of 100 clock hours of course-aligned field experiences as well as experiences in diverse school settings for all candidates.

Field experiences are the part of the professional preparation for teaching that enables candidates to acquire practical applications to add to the theoretical knowledge treated within course work.

All School of Education courses include a field requirement. The Satellite Field Experience Network has been designed to assist candidates in obtaining their field experience placements for upper-level methods courses.
