Licensure for Teaching

Elmhurst College currently offers 6-12 foreign language teaching in French, German and Spanish. If you are interested in adding a minor in another language, please contact the department chair.

Requirements
Prospective teachers must take WL 440 Special Methods in the Teaching of Foreign Languages prior to student teaching. WL 440 is offered annually during Fall Term. Students should convey their intention to teach as soon as possible to the Chair and must be admitted to the secondary education program in the Department of Education.

Candidates for licensure as foreign language teachers must demonstrate a minimum proficiency level of Intermediate High in the target language according to the ACTFL OPI test as required by the state of Illinois. Students are strongly encouraged to take the OPI test one year prior to student teaching.

Here’s how to schedule your OPI test:

Additional information on the OPI is available at the website of Language Testing International.
