Starting Out

These book series, which endeavor to explore all the angles of a topic, are a good starting point for your research:
Opposing Viewpoints ~ has books on discrimination, race relations, interracial America, social justice, and working women.
 Taking Sides ~ looks at race and ethnicity, controversial legal issues, complex economic and social topics, and human sexuality.
 Current Controversies ~ examines the current debates on such topics as the disabled, ethics, gay rights, minorities, nationalism and ethnic conflict, racism, and sexual harassment.

• You can also get some good background information using these two online reference tools:
  • Britannica Online ~ a good source of background information and bibliographies on the Civil Rights Act, gay rights, and other subjects.
     
  • CQ Researcher ~ an excellent source for current topics. Past issues have looked at such hot-button topics as diversity in the workplace, affirmative action, age discrimination, the Americans with Disabilities Act, family leave, and the glass ceiling, among others.

Finding Books

Use Illinet Online to find books held in the Elmhurst College library as well as books owned by 64 other Illinois academic libraries.

• Any word, anywhere search offers a good way to start looking for books in Illinet Online. Use the main words describing your topic. Use quotes to enclose a multiple word phrase.

• A more precise way of searching is to use a Browse Subject search. Illinet Online's controlled vocabulary is known as Library of Congress Subject Headings (or LC subject headings). Unlike keywords, you can't simply make these up: you have to find out what the exact terms are and enter them in Illinet as a browse subject search. Some examples of established subject headings are:

Ordering books from other libraries ~ Illinet Online allows you to request books held by 64 academic libraries in Illinois. As an Elmhurst student, you can also go to any Illinet school and check out a book in person. All you need is your Jaypass.

Once you've identified your articles, use Illinet Online to determine if the library owns the journal in print or in microfilm. Because there are also journals available electronically, you'll want to check Journals and Magazines Available Online for electronic access to journals.

If you cannot find an article at Elmhurst, you can request it through our online Interlibrary Loan article request form.

How do I find out if the Elmhurst College Library has the periodical I need?

Search for the periodical title in Illinet Online. For example, search for the title Workforce. If you don't find the periodical you need, take a look at the list, Full Text Periodicals Available Online. This list is available in the library as well as online. You can also call or email the Reference Department to inquire about a specific title or ask a question.

• ABusiness Resource ~ a valuable set of links on the topics of "diversity" and "minority".
  
  
• Americans with Disabilities Act ~ Information and Technical Assistance on the Americans with Disabilites Act.

• The Affirmative Action and Diversity Project ~ based out of UCSB, the project looks at the many issues surrounding the topic of Affirmative Action. A bibliography and list of links is included.

• American Association for Affirmative Action (AAAA) ~ "the association of professionals managing affirmative action, equal opportunity, diversity and other human resource programs." The Resources and Links are helpful to nonprofessionals as well.

• American Institute for Managing Diversity ~ a list of resources, research notes and reports, and Internet resources make this a page worth exploring.
  
  
• Business.com ~ search engine and subject directory specifically for business issues. The "human resources" link has many valuable sites that contain diversity.

• Diversity Database, University of Maryland ~ an online index of multicultural and diversity resources, including glossaries and directories.

• DiversityInc.com ~ with articles on recruitment, demographics, marketing, and other aspects of diversity, this site holds a lot of interesting information. Free registration is required to view the many articles and lists, although the resource guide can be accessed without registering.

• Diversity World ~ not an amusement park, but a source of online diversity resources, job listings, links, events, and forums. Intended for both management and individuals.
