Starting Your Internet Search

  • Librarians Index to the Internet ~ This site includes descriptions and evaluations of Web pages and directories. This is a good place to start for information on social topics. Type the name of the issue in the the search box to find web sites.
  • BUBL ~ Another listing of select web sites on a number of topics. You can browse by Dewey Decimal Number (DDC) as well as execute a search or browse subject areas.
  • Voice of the Shuttle ~ Focusing on the humanities and social sciences, this database lists a large number of Minority Studies web sites.
  • ContentSelect Anthropology database~ Pearson Education journal database- click on the blue Journal Research/ContentSelect button in the lower right-hand corner.
  • Multicultural Resources ~ from Elmhurst College, a comprehensive list of ethnic/cultural Web sites

Articles and Databases

 

Lexis-Nexis Academic Choose News, then look at both General News and World News to find information from a variety of sources. This tool can also be used to access transcripts from radio and TV programs.
Gale Virtual Reference Library The full-text of several print reference books are available here online, including Countries and Their Cultures (under the Nation and World publication heading).
Academic Search Elite A general database that contains both scholarly and popular journal sources, many in full text. Be sure to evaluate the sources in these databases before using them.
CultureGrams An excellent resource for cultural research. Go to World Edition and pick a country from the geographic map.
Periodical Abstracts Index to general and academic journals, with selected full text. Be sure to evaluate the sources in these databases before using them.
WilsonSelectPlus Covers the social sciences, humanities, business, general science, as well as current issues. All full text.Be sure to evaluate the sources in these databases before using them.

 

How do I find out if the Library has the journal I need? Follow these 3 easy steps:

    1. Full Text Periodicals Available Online ~ Search for the journal/magazine title.

    2. Check Illinet Online for the journal/magazine title (not the article title).

    3. To order an article the Elmhurst College library does not own, fill in this form: Request an article.

Print Resources About Cultures

  • Sociological Abstracts (1962-present)
      • The key print index for sociology.
      • Contains citations from journals in sociology and related disciplines.
      • Shelved alphabetically behind the Bound Periodicals section of the library (downstairs)

  • Use Illinet Online to find books held in the Elmhurst College library as well as books owned by 65 other Illinois academic libraries. Enter relevant key words, or to be more specific, enter your subject as a Browse Subject term in the search box.

  • Ordering books from other libraries ~ Don't limit yourself solely to Elmhurst Library's collection.
