Introduction to Information Literacy

Information Literacy is knowing how to find, analyze, and use information; the ability to gather information from multiple sources, select relevant material, and organize it into a form that will allow the user to make decisions or take specific actions.

What is the ERIC?

The Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education, produces the world’s premier database of journal and non-journal education literature. The ERIC online system provides the public with a centralized ERIC Web site for searching the ERIC bibliographic database of more than 1.1 million citations going back to 1966. More than 107,000 full-text non-journal documents (issued 1993-2004), previously available through fee-based services only, are now available for free. ERIC is moving forward with its modernization program, and has begun acquiring materials for addition to the database

There are three ways you can search ERIC using the library website.

ERIC via EBSCO
is a key source for education information. Allows users to access articles from scholarly as well as professional periodicals, in addition to ERIC documents. Many articles are available in full-text, and there are links to full-text ERIC documents available.

ERIC via FirstSearch
A key source for education information. Allows users to access articles from scholarly as well as professional periodicals, in addition to ERIC documents. Many articles are available in full-text, and there are links to full-text ERIC documents available.

Education Resource Information Center (ERIC) Website
Allows users to access the full text of more that 107,000 ERIC documents released between 1993 and 2004. To use this website most efficiently, you will need the ERIC document number (e.g., ED425001) of the material you wish to retrieve. Use ERIC to find ERIC documents and their numbers.
