Laura Ingalls Wilder is one of my favorite writers of children's literature.
Her books tell the story of pioneer life on the wild frontier in a vast
and great new country. It is a fictional series but it is Laura's
life and what she has choosen to share with us. I think it is great that
she began writing the books when she was sixty-three, because her age brought
great wisdom to what she has recounted and the experiences she has choosen
to tell people about from this wonderful and full life she has led.
The series begins in Pepin, Wisconsin, where Laura was born on 7 February 1867 and the story is of a five year old and the series of books continues as Laura grows older and her family moves from the woods, to the prairie, to town, and all the stops in between and into adulthood. We all learn from her experiences of making cheese, butter, sewing, cooking, and just plain being a member of a family trying to survive and enjoying life to it's fullest.
All of the books in the series provide the reader with invaluable lessons on life. I highly recommend the series to be read by students and for chapter reading to classes.
