Roald Dahl
was born in Llandaff, Wales on September 13, 1916. His parents were
of Norwegian background and had five children together and two children from
his fathers previous marriage. Roald's father Harald past away when
Roald was only four years old from a severe case of pneumonia.
Roald's mother
then sent him to a private school in Derbyshire called Repton. Roald
later describes his experience by saying, "I was appalled by the fact
that masters and senior boys were allowed literally to wound other boys,
and sometimes quite severly. I couldn't get over it. I never
got over it..." (from Bo: Tales of Childhoo,
1984) This actually became his inspiration to write his first
short stories about children who fight back against cruel adults and authorities.
When Roald
turned eighteen he took a job with Shell working in places like Tanzania
and London. When World War II began, Roald served in the Air Force.
He later was in a crash that fractured his skull and affected his
ability to walk. Roald wrote his first short story called, A Piece
of Cake during the months in which he was recovering. Then he
went on to write his first children's book called The Gremlins in
1943.
Roald married
an actress by the name of Patricia Neal in 1953. Together they had
one son an four daughters. However, this marriage ended after several
