Dav Pilkey is the type of writer that children
are attracted to. When he was in grade school, he was known as the
"class clown" for being disruptive. When his teacher had enough, she
would send him into the hallway where a desk waited for him. Dav filled
the desk with paper and drawing supplies. In the beginning, he only
drew pictures. However, as time went on Dav began making up stories
to go with his pictures. He invented numerous superheros including
"The Amazing Captain Underpants" who flew around giving wedgies to bad guys.
This is where it all began for Dav Pilkey.
When Dav was nineteen he wrote a book called
World
War Won and entered it in a contest. The book won first prize
for his age group and was published. The Adventures of Captain Underpants
series has sold nearly one million copies, was on the American Bestsellar
Pick List and recieved the Publishers Weekly "Cuffie" Award for the funniest
book of the year. His book
Dog Breath was awarded the California
Young Reader Medal and
The Paperboy was chosen as a Caldecott Honor
book. Other work by Dav Pilkey includes: Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot
Series, he illistrated
Dumb Bunnies books,
Big Dog and Little
Dog books, Dragon books,
Dogzilla,
Kat Kong,
"Twas
the Night Before Thanksgiving, and many more. Chilren are so attracted
to Dav Pilkey's books because he shows off his goofy sense of humor in his
books. He is creative and has a special gift for writing and illistating.
I suggest that teachers use his books in their classrooms and that
student become familar with his work. Information retrieved from www.pilkey.com.
