Jerry Spinelli
was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania. Jerry Spinelli began writing
at the age of 16. He decided to become a writer after his baseball
team won a big game. Everyone went out to celebrate the victory. Everyone,
except Jerry. Jerry went home and wrote about his team winning. When
his writing was printed in the town paper, Jerry decided to become a writer
instead of a professional baseball player.
Many of Jerry's books rely on his own memories of his
childhood. Jerry writes stories that kids can relate to because they are
true to life. When he does not know what to write about, he thinks
about what silly things his seven kids have done. Yes that was seven
kids! Jerry also lives with his wife Eileen, who is also a childrens
book author.
"Each of us, in our kidhood,
was a Huckleberry Finn, drifting on a current that seemed tortuously slow
at times, poling for the shore to check out every slightest glimmer in the
trees … the taste of Brussels sprouts … your first forward roll … cruising
a mall without a parent … overnighting it … making your own grilled cheese
sandwich … the thousand landfalls of our adolescence .… And now we know
what we did not know then: What an adventure it was!"
