Jack Gantos was born in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania and was raised in
Barbados and South Florida. He was a writer at a very young age. In sixth
grade, he knew that he could be a better writer than his sister. He decided
to try and prove himself right. This is when he began to write for more than
himself and his teachers. While in college, Jack Gantos began to create
picture books with the help of an artistic friend. This is the first time
one of Jack Gantos' books were published. He continued to write children's
books while he was also busy developing a master's degree program at Emerson
College in Boston in children's book writing. Jack Gantos' collection has
expaned beyond picture books and now encompasses stories for middle school
students, high school students, young adults and all others. He even features
his alter ego, Jack Henry, in a middle school series.
Currently Jack Gantos is spending his time travelling
and giving lectures at universities, conferences, and at in-services. He
has become nationally known for his humorous and creative stories.
