Chinua Achebe
(1930 -     )

book with glasses

Chinua Achebe is one of my favorite authors because he is very proud of his history and culture and so am I, so I relate to his writings. Achebe was born Albert Chinualumogu Achebe in 1930 in Ogibi, Nigeria. He started off not liking the Ogibi people and had to deal with confrontations that went on between his family that was Christian, and those that kept the traditional Ibo culture. All of these experiences caused him to view the Ibo culture and society in a completely different way, and he learned to value his ancsestors' culture. From the events Chinua experienced, he was able to reconnect with his roots, value their beauties, and find himself. In 1948, Achebe attended University College at Ibaden, where he decided to reject the British name his parents gave him and take his indigenous name Chinua. This action was brought upon by his newfound sense of pride and value for his African culture. In 1952, Achebe read Mister Johnson, a book by Joyce Cary that slandered Africans, and in response to this book he wrote Things Fall Apart in 1958. This novel was about Nigeria and it reverred Africa in a positive way.
