My Experiences in the Classroom

I am currently a preservice teacher at Elmhurst College. I have observed and participated in many different types of classrooms:  kindergarten, special education, third, fourth, seventh, eighth, and high school classroom. Through these experiences, I feel that I will gain techniques and ideas that will help me in my own teaching career.  Also from these experiences, I have begun to develop my own philosophy of education. This is a philosophy in progress and will probably change as my knowledge and experiences in the education field increase.

My Philosophy of Education

Education is one of the most important aspects of a person's life.  It provides people with the beginning of a lifelong journey.  What is learned in school is carried throughout life's every day activities. Education is needed in order to enjoy and appreciate everything. Teachers help their students realize their potential and how to use their abilities.  These same students will become our future.  Every career begins with an education, whether it is a book or a lesson of life.
Teaching is an extraordinary career.  Teachers shape minds and encourage children to follow the right path.  Teachers are always remembered, whether in a good way or in a bad way.  They affect children that much.  This career is an ongoing learning experience where each day presents new challenges.  There seems to never be a dull moment in teaching.  These are many of the reasons why I have a desire to go into the teaching profession.

Important Teacher Characteristics I Feel I Posses

Three characteristics I possess that are needed for teaching are creativity, dedication, and an awareness of individual differences. Creative characteristics will help make everyday learning fun for the children.  New ideas and methods will be used so each lesson in education is never boring.  Through creativity, a subject can become exciting and more interesting.  Dedication is good in a teacher, because the students will feel secure.  The students will know that the teacher is always there when help is needed.  Lastly, a teacher needs to be aware of individual differences.  No children should be favored in a classroom, and race and ethnicity should never be an issue.  Therefore, a teacher needs to be aware of individual differences.
