This story of a tragically injured young silversmith
who ends up hip-deep in the American Revolution is inspiring, exciting,
and sad. Winner of the prestigious Newbery Award in 1944, Esther Forbes's
story has lasted these 50-plus years by including adventure, loss, courage,
and history in a wonderfully written, very dramatic package. It's probably
not great for little guys but mature 11-year-olds or older will find it
a great adventure.

Johnny Tremain is one of the best books I have ever read. It is the story
of a fourteen-year-old silversmith's apprentice who is very talented, but
a bit proud and arrogant. His life is suddenly completely changed when an
accident leaves him with a maimed and useless hand, and he is unable to continue
his trade. Johnny eventually befriends an older boy called Rab, and is thrown
into the fear and excitement surrounding the Revolution when he begins working
for a rebel newspaper, The Boston Observer. Although this is a wonderful
and masterfully written book, I thouroughly warn teachers against assigning
it to their History or Social Studies class. Kids either really love it,
or really despise it, and some parts are a bit dragged out.
