S.E. Hinton

Susan Eloise Hinton was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She has always reading, but wasn't satisfied with the literature being written for young adults. This influenced her to begin writing books such as The Outsiders. "With this book, Hinton launched a revolution in young adult literature."
Her publishers suggested that she write under the name S.E. Hinton because they felt that her writing would not be appreciated otherwise.
Her second book was written while she was studying to become a teacher at the University of Tulsa. Her husband (then boyfriend) David Inhofe influenced her writing greatly. That Was Then, This is Now was published in 1971.
Hinton's third book, Rumble Fish, was published in 1975 and her fourth book Tex was published in 1967. Matt Dillon stared in three movie versions of Hinton's books.
Taming the Star Runner was Hinton's next book; her first book told in the third person. After this publication, Hinton took a break to spend time with her son, Nick.
Big David, Little David is a picture book written by Hinton about a joke she and her husband played on Nick when he was entering kindergarten.
Hinton's last book is the most autobiographical. The Puppy Sister tells a story about Nick getting a dog and wondering when she would turn into a person.
S.E. Hinton has received the American Library Association's and School Library Journal's first annual Margaret A. Edwards Award for authenticity.
