Putting ourselves into the book
and bringing it to life
Lynne Reid Banks was born in London. During
,W.W.II she left London to live in Canada and became a "war guest."
Like many kids, Lynne Reid Banks didn't care for reading as a child. She
would act out her own stories and with her made up characters. She
was an only child and never felt alone because she had her characters to
talk to. These characters became her friends. When she returned
from Canada she began to study theater and acted
for about five years. Then Lynne became a journalist (1 of 2 in Britain
at that time.). Lynne moved to Israel where she met her future husband.
She later got married and had three sons.
Ms. Reid Banks used her three sons as models
for her book The Indian In The Cupboard. She believes that
children's' books should contain a strong element of fantasy. These
stories should be so powerful that the children should be able to put themselves
into the character's shoes. Lynne is still writing many stories
to this day. Many of her books are oriented to kids ages 9-12,
but she has books for young adults too.

Her books have made a difference
in my life. Like her, I was a child that was reluctant to read and
an only child. The book The
Indian In The Cupboard, caught my imagination; I could see the story
in my head. It was the first time something like this has happened
to me. I wanted to become a reader. It was also through
this book, that I began to imagine what it would be like to have a magical
cupboard, that dolls alive. How neat that would be; to be able to make
new friends?
