What is a scholary resouce?~ A scholarly (or academic, or "professional") article or journal is different from other "popular" sources. Scholarly publications are usually written by a specialist in a particular field, and are meant for specific audiences. Scholarly articles usually contain original research and findings, and are almost always accompanied by a bibliography. These articles are also often "peer-reviewed."
What does "peer-reviewed" mean? ~ One kind of professional literature. "A journal for which manuscripts submitted by potential contributors are evaluated by at least one subject specialist in addition to the editor prior to acceptance for publication. Academic Search Elite ~Selected full text of journals in the social sciences, humanities, general science, multicultural studies, and others. You can also find articles from the journal Literacy Today indexed here.
ERIC (Educational Resource Information Center) ~A key source for education information. Contains many journals dealing with literacy issues, especially in education.
To access Academic Search Elite and ERIC from off campus, go to Articles and Databases and choose EBSCO under "Database Interfaces," then choose "Academic Search Elite" or "ERIC." You may also need to look at Accessing Library Resources from Off Campus.
ProQuest Education Journals ~Contains more than 550 titles on education--including primary, secondary, and university-level topics--with nearly 300 in full text. Includes the indexing and abstracts from Education Abstracts, plus many additional titles. You can also find articles from Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy and Reading Research Quarterly indexed here.

JSTOR ~This resource contains a number of older journals that have been collected made available online. Covers many pre-Internet language and literature journals.

Lexis-Nexis Statistical ~this site provides access to the Statistical Abstract of the United States. On-campus access only.
