Library Resources

  • The Writer's Market (2005), Reference Section, Call Number R 029.6 W956

This reference work deals with all aspects of paid publishing for writers. There is a section about the Consumer Magazine market, which gives details about specific magazines (focus/theme, contact information, et. cetera). Note that all magazines listed in The Writer's Market pay for accepted articles.

  • Magazines for Libraries (2005), available at the Reference Desk.
  • Periodical arranged by subject- helpful to see which magazines publish in your essay's subject area. Contact information is usually included, though there are no publication details such as those contained in the Writer's Market. It is important to note that some periodicals do not accept outside submissions.

  • Ulrich's Periodicals Directory, 4 vol. (2005), available at the Reference Desk.
  • Similar to Magazines for Libraries, Ulrich's is a another subject-based periodical directory, similiar in scope but with more international coverage.

Specific Magazines that accept nonfiction

  • Atlantic Monthly, like Harpers (see below), is a monthly that features nonfiction.
It also has some fiction, poetry, and reviews.

  • Harpers, similar to the Atlantic (see above). All four genres with emphasis on
    nonfiction.

  • Creative Nonfiction, a quarterly. All literary nonfiction. No ads, no fiction, no
    poetry. Good quality.

  • Georgia Review, a quarterly with a balance of genres similar to the Virginia
    Quarterly Review (see below).

  • Agni, published twice yearly. Includes fiction, poetry, reviews, and several
    nonfiction works each issue.

  • The New Yorker, a weekly. It publishes a story and a couple of poems in each
issue, but it remains the most influential publisher of nonfiction. It was the
first to print such momentous works as "The Silent Spring" and
"Hiroshima." Major articles tend to be long and carefully researched. Oth-
    ers are short and humorous.

  • The New York Times Magazine Section, one of the few newspaper supplements
that prints nonfiction with literary merit.

  • The Virginia Quarterly Review, a distinguished quarterly that publishes a bal-
ance of fiction, poetry, reviews, and nonfiction works of high quality.

Nonfiction publishing resources: web-based

There are far more "calls" for nonfiction article submissions than can be listed here; a good way to search for magazines that are looking for articles is to perform a Google search with the keywords "nonfiction submissions" or something similar. You shoould get quite a few publications looking for articles.
