  • Oxford English Dictionary ~ The historical dictionary of the English language. Use this online resource to examine the origins, meaning, and evolution of key words.

 

Using the Library catalog

Use I-Share to find books held in the Elmhurst College library as well as books owned by other Illinois academic libraries. Enter relevant key words, or to be more specific, enter your subject as a "Browse Subject" term in the search box.

      There are also several book series that deal with popular recent & current topics:

      To find books in these series on your topic, do a "Guided Keyword" search and enter the series title in one search box and your search topic in another search box.

Ordering books from other libraries ~ Don't limit yourself solely to Elmhurst Library's collection. Search all 65 member libraries by clicking on "Repeat search in All I-Share Libraries" at the top of the page. Order your books as soon as possible: titles can take between 7-10 days to arrive.

 

 


 

Article databases

Databases with rhetoric-related periodicals

  • MLA Bibliography~ Huge international index to literature, languages, linguistics, and folklore. This is an excellent place to start your search, as many journals in other full-text databases are grouped together and searchable here.

  • JSTOR~ database that contains more than 100 journals in 15 different disciplines, including Rhetoric Review, College Composition and Communication (CCC), and College English. When searching JSTOR, be sure to select a specific journal or journal subject area to search in (such as language and literature).

  • Project Muse~Journals in this collection cover primarily the humanities and the social sciences. Includes the journals Discourse and Philosophy and Rhetoric.
General Databases
  • Academic Search Premier ~ Excellent database that covers a wide range of topics.

  • Wilson Select Plus ~Covers the social sciences, humanities, business, general science, as well as current issues.

  • Oxford English Dictionary ~ The historical dictionary of the English language. Use this online resource to examine the origins, meaning, and evolution of key words.

Internet Resources

  • A Handbook of Rhetorical Devices~ This resource "contains definitions and examples of more than sixty traditional rhetorical devices." An excellent general source.

  • The Forest of Rhetoric~ by silva rhetoricae. This is a "guide to the terms of classical and renaissance rhetoric." Very detailed.

  • Rhetcomp.com~ A portal to rhetorical journals, blogs, listservs and more.
