Search Illinet Online, the library's catalog. 

Sample searches Using Guided Keywords

  • For works by an author or critic, do an Author Words search on the person's name, e.g., e. e. cummings or Emily Dickinson.
  • For works about authors, critics, or literature, do a Subject Words search. For example...

Reference Books

Use these reference sources to find out who your author is, what he or she wrote, and what critics think in general.

Search Gale Literary Index, to find out which reference book to look in.

To find criticism in these reference books, look at the author index in the last volume. Look up the name of the poet you are intersested in, and the index will tell you in which series and on what page (e.g, Poetry Criticism, Contemporary Literary Criticism, etc.) the criticism of that poet appears. Search MagillOnAuthors to find an introduction and basic bibliography about an author.
