Finding Books

Books are often good sources of biographies and literary criticism.
  • Use Illinet Online (IO)to find books held in the Elmhurst College library as well as books owned by 64 other Illinois academic and research libraries.
  • Sample Searches
      • Works by Jurek Becker- Browse Author: Jurek Becker
      • Works by an author in a collection- Boolean search: Jurek AND Becker
      • Works about Jurek Becker- Browse Subject Words: Jurek Becker
  • When Elmhurst College doesn't have the material you need, search the following:
    • Illinet Online - select All ILCSO libraries, then repeat your search - you can place your own requests by selecting Request, then entering your ID (currently your SSN) and last name. If you have trouble placing requests, please contact the Reference Desk (630-617-3173).
    • SWAN - the Suburban Library System catalog, including Elmhurst Public Library and many other local public library catalogs.
    • WorldCat, then request the book through interlibrary loan.

Literary Databases:
  • Gale's Literature Resource Center ~This powerful tool from Gale combines a variety of key literary resources, including MLA International Bibliography, Scribners Writers Series, Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature, a literary-historical timeline, Contemporary Authors, Contemporary Literary Criticism Select, and the Dictionary of Literary Biography.

    To access this resource from off campus, go to Reference/Literature Sources, then choose Literature Resource Center. Y ou will need to enter the following ID, "elmhurst" (without the quotation marks), when prompted at the next screen. Then click the "Proceed" button.

General databases:
    To access this resource from off campus, go to Articles and Databases, then choose WilsonSelectPlus from the alphabetical list.
  • How do I find out if the Elmhurst College Library has the journal I need?
    3 steps:
    1. Full Text Periodicals Available Online ~ Search for the journal/magazine title, e.g. Newsweek.
    2. If the journal isn't available online, then check Illinet Online to see if we carry the journal/magazine in print form. Type in the title and choose Start of Magazine/Journal title from the box on the right.
    3. If we don't carry the journal online or in print form, you'll have to order the article from another library. Fill in this form: Request an article.
