Finding Primary Sources in Books

  • Use Illinet Online to find primary sources held in the Elmhurst College library as well as books owned by 44 other Illinois academic libraries.
  • One way to find primary sources is to do an Any word, Anywhere search using terms that describe your topic plus one of the following words:
        •  
          sources

          diaries 

          correspondence

          speeches

  • Sample Any word, Anywhere Searches

  •  
    • reformation sources
    • england history sources
    • philosophers correspondence
    • nazi germany sources
    • world war correspondence
    • hitler speeches
    • europe history sources
    • russia history sources
    • medicine history sources

     

  • Another way to identify primary sources is to access Illinet Online, and choose Advanced Keyword Search on the top tabs.
    • Under the Limit option, choose the date range during which you would like your source to be published.
    • Click on Set Limits
    • Add a topic in the Search Term box above, then press Enter or Submit.

For example, you might choose the dates 1910-1919, and enter the word Roosevelt in the Search Term Box. This will retrieve materials by or about Roosevelt published between 1910 and 1919.



Finding Background Information

  • It can be helpful to consult a scholarly encyclopedia for more information about an historical event, person, or period. 
  • Sometimes, such an encyclopedia will suggest primary sources
  • Britannica Online
