*** Note: If unable to link directly into these e-books, please go to the Reference Sources area of the EC library website, then select Gale Virtual Reference Library.

Use Illinet Online to find books and sound recordings. Books are located on the second floor of the library; sound recordings are available at the Circulation desk. In Illinet Online, it is most efficient to use Author to find works of a particular artist, and Subject for materials about the artist or work. Examples of some Subject Heading searches:

Musicals history and criticism
Avant-garde music
Items that are not available at Elmhurst but appear in the catalog may be requested directly in Illinet Online. Please ask a librarian if you need assistance. Items not available through Illinet may be ordered using our online Interlibrary Loan book request form.

Locating Articles with Library Resources

The following library databases cover music as well as popular culture.

RILM Abstracts of Music Literature

A music database which covers more than 500 scholarly journals from 1967-date. This index to music includes information on historical musicology, ethnomusicology, instruments and voice, librarianship, performance practice and notation, theory and analysis, pedagogy, liturgy, dance, criticism, music therapy, and interdisciplinary studies on music and various other fields. There is no full text available in this database.

JSTOR

JSTOR is an an electronic full text archive of titles, often going back to the first issue of a journal's existence. Music titles currently available (and the years that are online) can be found by clicking here. JSTOR does not include current issues of journals.

To search for music topics, check the Music box in the "Select Disciplines or Journals" section of the Search screen. You can also use this database to search for general topics - just select additional Disciplines, such as History or African American Studies, as appropriate.

Academic Search Premier

A general database that has limited coverage of music topics. The database contains both scholarly and popular journal sources, many in full text.

Periodical Abstracts

Information on a wide range of subjects, often in full text.

Naxos Music Library Naxos provides access to over 85,000 music tracks from the Marco Polo, Dacapo, and Naxos catalogs. Users can listen to audio tracks of classical, contemporary jazz, world, folk, and Chinese music. Besides providing streaming audio, the database also provides biographical information on musicians and composers as well as notes on the music itself. Read the Naxos FAQ for information on hardware and software requirements.
Check Journals and Magazines Available Online for electronic access to journals, and use Illinet Online to determine if the library owns a journal in print or microfilm. If the article you seek is unavailable from these sources, please request it using our online Interlibrary Loan article request form.

Citing Information

MLA Style information - collected by E.C. librarians
For music, the best guide for MLA is Using Modern Language Association (MLA) Format from Purdue University. See "Other Types of Sources" for sound recordings and "Basic Forms for Electronic Sources" for citing online information.
See the following sections in the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers 6th ed. 2003 (R 808.042 M685 2003, available at the Reference Desk) for more details on citing music:
