Locating Books, Scores and Sound Recordings in the A.C. Buehler Library

Reference Sources

A list of all materials on Reserve for this course is available here.

Use Illinet Online to find books, scores, and sound recordings on your topic. Scores and books are located on the second floor of the library; scores have call numbers of M780-M789, books have call numbers of 780-789. Sound recordings on Reserve for courses are checked out at the Circulation Desk; there are several listening stations available in the library.

Music can be difficult to locate in library catalogs because the titles of musical works may be in different languages. This is especially true of Mozart operas. Libraries make finding musical works easier by using Uniform Titles. See this guide about Using Uniform Titles for further assistance.

In Illinet Online, use Browse Author with a Quick Limit of Music Scores or Music Recordings to find scores and sound recordings. Use Browse Subject to find materials about these works. Examples of some Browse Subject searches that can get you on the right track, for both musical and cultural topics:

Items that are not available at Elmhurst may be available at other academic libraries in Illinois. Click here to search all ILCSO libraries and request these items directly in Illinet Online. Locating Articles with Library Resources

The following library databases cover music as well as history and culture. Be sure to evaluate the sources in these databases before using them.

Music Index Online A database which covers over 600 music periodicals from 1979-1999. The print indexes covering 1958-1978 are also available, and are located on the lower level of the library at the end of the Bound Periodicals - indexes are shelved alphabetically. There is no full text available in this database.
Academic Search Elite A general database that has limited coverage of music topics. The database contains both scholarly and popular journal sources, many in full text.
Periodical Abstracts Information on a wide range of subjects including literature, psychology, religion, and women's studies from scholarly and popular journals, often in full text.

Use the new version Illinet Online (the library's online catalog) to determine if the library owns the journal in print or microfilm. All bound periodicals and microfilm are located on the lower level of the library. Also check Journals and Magazines Available Online for electronic access to journals. If the article you seek is unavailable from these sources, please request it using our online Interlibrary Loan article request form.
