Research Methods in Psychology

The following are selected resources available in the library and on the Internet.

If you are accessing this page from off campus, the links to most library databases will not work. To use these resources, go to the Library Web Page, where you can connect to Articles and Databases, Reference Sources, and Electronic Journals and Newspapers after providing your Elmhurst College login and password. If you don't know your E.C. login or password, you'll want to see Computer Services, Room 107 CSTC.

 Locating Articles in Library Resources

PsycINFO

This is the best place to find citations on psychological topics. There is very little full text available. When searching PsycInfo, you may want to limit your search to particular types of studies. To do this, perform your search; then choose Limit, and select the appropriate Form/Content Type. Examples of types (you may choose more than one by holding Ctrl while clicking to cover your bases):

0800 Empirical Study
    0810 Case Study

    0820 Clinical Case Report

    0830 Experimental Replication

    0840 Followup Study

    0850 Longitudinal Study

    0860 Treatment/Outcome Study

Another method that may be useful is to do a separate search on the keywords "field study," then combining that search with your general topic search.

ProQuest Psychology Journals

Available on campus only, this database contains the full text of almost 300 academic journals in psychology and related disciplines. This database allows you to focus your search on peer-reviewed journals, and limiting your search to "feature" article types appears to ensure that articles present research results.

Academic Search Elite

These databases have limited coverage of psychological topics. The benefit to these databases is that there is some full text available; the drawback is that they cover both scholarly and popular journal sources. Be sure to evaluate the sources in these databases. Find out the difference between a scholarly and popular source.

Periodical Abstracts
PsychARTICLES Full text articles dating back to 1996, covers hundreds of scientific, technical, and medical journals.

Use Illinet Online to determine if the library owns the journal in print or microfilm, and check Journals and Magazines Available Online for electronic access to journals. If the article you seek is unavailable from these sources, please request it through our online Interlibrary Loan article request form.

Locating Books in the A.C. Buehler Library

Use Illinet Online to find books on your topic. When you know the first few words of the title, author, or subject you are searching for, you can use an "Exact Start of" search. However, use "Keywords" when you are unsure of what you're looking for. Examples of Subject searches:
