Finding Information Using Library Resources

Some of the databases below contain both popular and research information. Be sure to evaluate the sources in these databases before using them.

Journal Articles

    • A general database that contains both scholarly and popular journal sources.
    • Many articles are available in full text.
    • Full text current articles from such sociological journals as Annual Review of Sociology and American Journal of Sociology are available.

    • A specialized database indexing articles pertaining to women's issues from a number popular and scholarly sources.
    • Includes links to some full text.
    • Does not need to be accessed from the Articles and Databases page.
    • Ask a librarian for the username and password.

    • Nearly 300 full text journals, include sociology periodicals.

  • Sociological Abstracts (1962-present) 
    • The key print index for sociology.
    • Contains citations from journals in sociology and related disciplines.
    • Shelved alphabetically behind the Bound Periodicals section of the library (downstairs)

     

    Electronic Newspapers

  • Proquest Newspapers
    • This collection allows you to search The Chicago Tribune, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The New York Times Book Review, and The New York Times Magazine. Full text.

     

  • Lexis- Nexis
    • A wide range of contemporary news, business, legal, and reference information.
    • Perform a "Guided News Search" to select certain geographical areas, i.e. North America, the Midwest, Illinois or overseas. Full text.
