INTERNET RESOURCES ON NEW ORLEANS

SOME RECOMMENDED PLACES TO START INTERNET SEARCHING:

  1. Librarians Index to the Internet - This site includes descriptions and evaluations of Web pages and directories. Type your subject in the the search box to find web sites.
  2. INFOMINE: Scholarly Internet Resource Collections - Social Sciences, Humanities, General Reference - This site has a subject browsing area as well as a search box to find information on specific topics.
  3. What about Google and Wikipedia?

Google will just find sites for you. It will not tell you whether or not those sites are accurate, or unbiased, or current. Google also cannot tell you whether or not a website is useful to you--for your project. Just because a website comes up in a top-ten Google result list doesn't mean that information is useful to you. You have to evaluate websites--see the links below to help you think about how to do that.

Wikipedia can be useful to help you get started finding information. But because anybody can edit a Wikipedia page, you have to take information you find there with a grain of salt. Wikipedia should never be used as more than a starting place for getting some background information, and then only as one of many. Always check Wikipedia facts against what you are finding elsewhere.

THEN TRY THESE: (Be sure to evaluate each Web site before using the information in your project.)

City of New Orleans - the city's official Web site, includes information about the mayor's office and city departments such as the police department

Yahoo! New Orleans - A good place to start when searching for New Orleans information. There are browsable sections on transportation, community, news and media, or just use it as a search engine.

NEW ORLEANS NEWS SOURCES

New Orleans news is available from a variety of sources. Here are some options:

The Times-Picayune New Orleans' daily newspaper. This is the commercial site, and contains current news, links to local attractions, etc. To search older issues of the Times-Picayune, see Academic Universe below.
Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe Articles from 1991-date from the Times-Picayune, New Orleans' daily newspaper. To find articles from this newspaper, Click the Sources tab on the top of the page, then type Times Picayune in the "Find a Source" search box in the upper righthand corner and click Search. Click on both of the options for the Times Picayune, and click the red OK button on the right. You will then have a searchbox that will just search that paper for articles.
