Internet Versions of Some Popular News Magazines

Current issues of the magazines listed are also available for browsing at the library. All library journals and magazines are arranged alphabetically by title.

Please keep in mind that online versions of magazines and newspapers may not contain all of the articles in a particular issues, or allow you full access to the entirity of an article.

How do I get the full text of an article?

Several of the library databases also contain popular press articles. Try Academic Search Elite and Periodical Abstracts (which are also listed below for the Final Minority Analysis).

If you find that you are unable to find an appropriate article, you may use one of the articles below. Hopefully, these articles can also provide you with examples of appropriate resources and types of articles to use.

Finding Journal Articles

  • Reference books such as encyclopedias can provide you with good solid information on a topic as well as lengthy bibliographies
    • xreferplus - Allows you to access over 150 different reference works full-text online
    • Gale Virtual Reference Library - over 30 reference works, including the Encyclopedia of Sociology, are available
  • Article databases provide access to articles in full text as well as descriptions of articles available elsewhere
    • Academic Search Elite - A general database that contains both scholarly and popular journal sources, many in full text. Be sure to evaluate the sources in these databases before using them.

    • Contemporary Women's Issues (CWI) - A database containing abstracts to articles on issues pertaining to women. Ask the librarian for the username and password to access this database.

    • JSTOR - An online library which does not include current issues of journals, but is an electronic archives of titles, often going back to the first issue of a journal's existence.

    • Periodical Abstracts - A general database that contains both scholarly and popular journal sources, many in full text. Be sure to evaluate the sources in these databases before using them.

    • Project MUSE - An online library of journals from university presses, with the full text of articles from 1996 to the present.

    • ProQuest Psychology Journals - Nearly 300 academic journals in psychology and related fields, all in full text. 

    • Sociological Abstracts (1962-present) - A print reference source containing citations from sociology journals. It is shelved alphabetically in the Bound Periodicals section of the library, on the lower level.

  • What if an article isn't available in a database full-text?

  • Check the list of General Resources on the Multicultural Resources page for reference books that may be helpful
  • Please check Illinet Online for books on specific groups, or on multiculturalism in general.
  • Use subject headings to focus your search; select "Browse Subject" and type in a subject
    • Multiculturalism
    • Asian Americans (or another ethnic/racial/religious group)
    • Minorities
    • Ethnicity
    • Ethnic relations
    • Race relations
    • Man-woman relationships--United States
    • Racism
    • Homosexuality
    • Islam
  • Use Illinet Online to request books from one of the other 64 libraries throughout the state if a book is not available at Elmhurst.
  • Or, use the online interlibrary loan request form to get books not owned by any Illinet institutions
