Articles, Databases and Electronic Journals

Some of the databases below contain both popular and research information. Be sure to evaluate the sources in these databases before using them. Don't forget our electronic newspaper subscriptions to such papers as the Chicago Tribune and the New York Times.

  • Academic Search Elite ~ A general database that contains both scholarly and popular journal sources, many in full text. Articles from current event magazines such as Time, Newsweek, The National Review, and The Nation can be found here.

  • Annual Review of Sociology ~ A prime source of review articles in the field of sociology. The library can gain access to volumes dating back to 1975 electronically via Wilson Select Plus, ProQuest Psychology, Academic Search Elite, and JSTOR (check the listing of full-text electronic journals to determine the years covered). Select volumes from the 1990s are also available in print (the call number is 301.05 A615). We do not subscribe to the Annual Review of Sociology through the Annual Reviews web site; however, this page will allow you to search for articles (although it will not allow you to view them).

  • JSTOR ~ An electronic archives of titles, often going back to the first issue of a journal's existence. JSTOR does not include current issues of journals. Journal issues available are all full text.

  • Lexis-Nexis Academic ~ A great source for articles from the world's newspapers, as well as transcripts from news shows and National Public Radio (NPR) programs.

  • Newspaper Source ~ Another comprehensive source for articles from newspapers from all over the world.

  • Periodical Abstracts ~ A general database that contains both scholarly and popular journal sources, many in full text.

  • Project Muse ~Available on campus only, this database contains the full text of articles from almost 200 journals published by Johns Hopkins University Press. Full text dates back to 1996.

  • ProQuest Psychology Journals ~ Nearly 300 academic journals in psychology and related social science fields including a focus on social work, all in full text.

  • PsycINFO ~ The primary source for psychological topics, produced by the American Psychological Association. Now accessed through EBSCO, there is linking to those full-text articles that are available online.

  • Sociological Abstracts (1962-present) ~ A print reference source containing citations from sociology journals. It is shelved alphabetically in the Bound Periodicals section of the library.

Use Illinet Online to determine if the library owns the journal in print or microfilm, and check Journals and Magazines Available Online for electronic access to journals. If the article you seek is unavailable from these sources, please request it through our online Interlibrary Loan article request form.
