* ATLA Religion Database - This international database covers such topics as Biblical studies, world religions, Church history, and religious perspectives on social issues. Through ATLA you can gain access to full-text articles in ATLAS (ATLA Serials Database). For some subject searching ideas, see the Books section below. For information on searching for specific Scripture citations, see Hints for Scripture Citation Searching.
* Academic Search Elite - Selected full text of journals in the social sciences, humanities, general science, multicultural studies, and other disciplines.
* Project Muse - An online library of nearly 200 journals from Johns Hopkins University Press, with the full text of articles from 1996 to the present. Journals in this collection cover primarily the humanities and the social sciences. Available on campus only.

Use Illinet Online to determine if the library owns the journal in print or microfilm, and check Journals and Magazines Available Online for electronic access to specific journals. If the article you seek is unavailable from these sources, please request it through our online Interlibrary Loan article request form.

Books (Illinet Online)

Use Illinet Online to locate books on your topic. Try Browse Subject with your subject words. Sample Library of Congress Subject Headings:

Elmhurst College shares its book catalog with 55 other research and academic institutions in Illinois, including several theology schools. To expand your search to all of the libraries in the consortium, click "ILCSO Libraries" in the banner bar at the top of the search screen, then select "All ILCSO Libraries" to repeat your search in a larger context. You may also want to check out WorldCat, a catalog of materials held in more than 44,000 libraries worldwide. Please allow 7-10 days for interlibrary loan materials to arrive.

Internet Sources

Beliefnet - "Beliefnet hopes to help people meet their own religious, spiritual and moral needs by providing information, inspiration, community, stimulation and products."

Finding God in Cyberspace - "This guide provides a selective listing of the best Internet resources of interest to religious studies scholars and students of religion... [it] selectively points to the best gateways to specific types of religious information. This guide is especially designed to provide both novice and advanced Internet researchers with a helpful starting point for online religious research."

Guide to Internet Resources for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion - "This website is a selective, annotated guide to a wide variety of electronic resources of interest to those who are teaching or studying religion and theology at the undergraduate or graduate level."

Librarians Index to the Internet (LII): Religion and Philosophy Topics - LII includes descriptions and evaluations of Web pages and directories. This is a good place to start for information because the sites have been reviewed by librarians and are only included if they contain something of value. Try browsing the subjects as well as using the search box to find information.

Religious Movements Homepage - includes information on established religions, but focuses more on newer religious movements.

Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance - Information on a variety of religious in order "to promote religious tolerance and freedom...describe religious faiths in all their diversity...describe controversial topics from all points of view."

United Church of Christ - a really good example of a denominational website; includes information about denominational beliefs as well as ministry, education, worship and justice resources. See also their Links page, which includes links to other denominations and organizations and a collection of political and social activism links.
