ABBREVIATIONS AND NOTE TAKING

PRESENTED BY THE ELMHURST COLLEGE LEARNING CENTER

Many students find it difficult to take notes because they cannot keep up with the instructor.  They believe that they write too slowly or they cannot follow the instructor's points quickly enough to make sense of the information.  BUT remember there is the differential between thought speed and speech speed.(See Effective Listening Skills for more about this.)

If you truly believe that you are just too slow, you need to learn some techniques to build up your "speed writing" while taking notes.  Developing a personal system of abreviations or symbols is the easiest way.

Examples:

psy  =  psychology

educ =  education

bio  =  biology

&    =   and

>    =   greater than
