Using Find it! at Elmhurst College

What is Find it!?

Find it! is a service called SFX that allows you to link from citations in selected databases to the full text of the item in another database. It can also link you to other information or services related to the item, such as a search of the library's catalog or to an interlibrary loan form.

How do I use Find it!?

Note: Not all of the library's databases connect to or from Find it!. Please see the list below for databases which have this capability, either as a "source" (a database in which you will see the Find it! button or link) or as a "target" (a database to which you can link to full text content from a Find it! menu), or both.

  1. Do a database search, and view the list of results.

  2. If the full text of the article you want is not already available in that database, click on the Find it! button to bring up a menu of links. The links lead to where the full text of the item is located, or possibly to other information or services, such as a link to an interlibrary loan form if the full text of the item is not available.

  3. Click the GO! button on the menu to connect to that link.

Will Find it! work from off campus?

Yes. Once you log in to any of the databases with your Elmhurst College technology account name and password, the Find it! menus will be available to you.

Why are there multiple links to the same article?

If the article is available in more than one database, the Find it! menu will list all possible sources. This lets you retrieve the article from a different database if your first choice is not available for some reason.

When I clicked GO! I ended up on the journal's home page or table of contents instead of linking to the full text of the article. What happened?

Some journal databases or Web sites are not set up to be able to link directly to articles, or the citation information within the link may be incomplete or incorrect. In that case Find it! will get you as close to the article as it can, usually to the journal's home page or that issue's table of contents. From there you will need to search for, or browse to, the article you want. Please see the list below for databases which are unable to link directly to articles.

There are no full text links to the article I want. Now what?

Full text is not always available for a variety of reasons:

  • The library doesn't have electronic access to that particular journal
  • The publisher does not make an electronic version available (or only makes it available some time after the print version is published, known as an "embargo")
  • The article is in a database that cannot utilize Find it!
In this situation, click on
We may own this. Check the Elmhurst College catalog GO
to see if the library subscribes to the journal in print or microfilm. If none of the above options results in a match, either click
Request this item through Interlibrary Loan GO
or request a copy of the article here.

I have a citation for an article. How do I find the full text for it?

  1. Try the Find it! Citation Linker. Enter as much of the citation as you know (journal title, date, volume and pages are the most useful) and click 'GO.' A Find it! menu will display, showing the closest matches to your citation information. From there you can link to full text, if available.
  2. If the Citation Linker is unsuccessful, please also check the Alphabetical List of Journals Online to confirm the library holds the journal you need electronically.
  3. If the previous steps are unsuccessful, check I-Share to see if the library subscribes to the journal in print or microfilm.
  4. If none of the above options results in a match, request a copy of the article here.
