Celebrating Children's Book Week(November 15-21)and Family Reading Night(November 18) |
There are two events celebrating reading in Illinois this November. The first event is the annual Children's Book Week, celebrated nationwide since 1912. This special week of reading, organized by the American Booksellers Association (ABA),is promoted under the intent of introducing young people to "books, authors, illustrators and ideas in schools, libraries, homes and bookstores. Through Children's Book Week, the Children's Book Council encourages young people and their caregivers to discover the complexity of the world beyond their own experience through books. For more information, check out the Children's Book Council Children's Book Week website.
The second event is Family Reading Night, celebrated annually in Illinois every third Thursday in November (Nov. 18th in 2004). Sponsored by Jesse White, Secretary of State and State Librarian, Family Reading Night is "a statewide event when families are encouraged to spend quality time reading together." For more information on Family Reading Night, take a look at the Illinois State Library's 2004 Family Reading Night website.
To assist with these events, we have compiled a list of children and adolescent literature books in our collection at the A.C. Buehler Library. Some of these titles are on display in the library on the main floor in the reading area (look for the Children's Book Week poster).
Note: to find these titles (and others) go to our online catalog and enter the book title, then choose "Start of Title" from the selections on the right side of the search screen and press Enter.
