Coretta Scott King Book Awards

Coretta Scott King, b.1927 - d.2006

Coretta Scott King, husband of slain Civil Right Leader Martin Luther King, Jr., passed away on January 31, 2006. She was an advocate for social and political issues in her own right -- fighting for such issues as civil rights, the right of women and anti-apartied inSouth Africa. Each year, the American Library Association's Ethnic Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT) bestows the Coretta Scott King Book Awards. The award (or awards) is given to an African American author and an African American illustrator for an outstandingly inspirational and educational contribution. The books promote understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream. The Award is further designed to commemorate the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to honor Mrs. Coretta Scott King for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace and world brotherhood.

Many of these books are available on a display table in the Reading Area. Some are located on the shelves. Please use I-Share (formerly Illinet Online) to determine the availability of these books.
