Uploading Web Pages Using WS_FTP

After you have created or edited your Web page using Netscape Composer, Microsoft Front Page, or some other program (Microsoft Word, etc.), make sure you have noted the directory and folder in which you have saved the page.

  • Open WS_FTP; this program should either be available as a shortcut on your Desktop, or listed in tghe Programs section of your Start button.
  • At the bottom left corner of the dialog box, click on Connect.
  • Fill out the template as follows:
    • Profile name: elmhurst
    • Host Name/Address: elmhurst.edu
    • Host Type: UNIX (standard)
    • User ID: your EC account name
    • Password: your EC account password (Check "Save Pwd" if desired)
    • Account: (leave blank)
  • Deselect the check boxes for Anonymous if necessary.
  • Click OK.
    • If you are unable to login, try changing your Host Type to Automatic detect.
If the connection is successful, the right half of the window will display the Remote System. Your personal Web page directory should look like /home/(dept)/(username)/user_html. If the directory listed in the Remote System box does not say that, click on ChgDir. Enter the remote directory name (e.g., /home/library/elainep/user_html), then click OK. You may also double-click the green up arrow to go up a level in the directory, or you may double-click on folders to access their contents.

Do the same thing on the Local System side, entering the directory for the location of the Web page(s) you wish to upload (e.g., a:\). You are now ready to transfer.

NOTE:
When you are in your office or at home, you may want to do the following to save these directories for future use. After both systems are set up, click on the Options button at the bottom of the screen. Under the Session tab, click on Save Current Directories as Connection Directories, then click OK.

Highlight the file in the Local System that you want to upload. Click the right arrow between the two systems. That's it! Repeat with other files as needed. When you're finished, Close the connection, then Exit.

You should now be able to find your files on the web server by going to their location from any web browser.
