BUS 250 Management Theory and Practice
This course combines a survey of the foundations of management theory and practice with a strong experiential component and an emphasis on skills development. Students develop their skills at written and oral expression, creative thinking, and team development. The class is highly interactive. Subjects include planning, motivation, leadership, communication, ethics, politics, decision making and problem solving, groups and teams and organizational change.
BUS 355 Negotiations: Theory and Practice
The course examines the structure, process, and nature of negotiations. It aims to develop an understanding of negotiation models, strategies, conflict resolution, communications styles, situational analysis, and elements of power and influence; and to develop the student’s negotiation skills.
COM 214 Managerial Listening
Many managerial functions require effective listening. All data necessary for strategic planning, decision making, and dealing successfully with personnel issues come through listening to colleagues, subordinates, superiors, and customers. In an increasingly competitive and diverse workplace, it is essential that managers develop proficiency in listening. The course enables students to increase their listening ability, and provides them with structured opportunities to develop and practice their listening skills, thus equipping them to foster continuous improvement in their roles as managers and supervisors.
COM 217 Principles of Interviewing
The course enhances student understanding of communication principles within the context of various types of professional interviews, including employment interviews, exit interviews, performance appraisals, and disciplinary interviews. It focuses on in-class performances of simulated interviews, role-plays, and presentations.
COM 312 Small Group Communication
Designed to explore the nature of group processes, the course emphasizes effective task group discussion, decision making, problem solving, and conflict resolution. Personal leadership skills and observational and analytic skills are developed through structured group communication activities.
COM 314 Communication and Culture in the Workplace
Due to dramatic demographic shifts and the rapid globalization of markets, managers and supervisors must support and manage an increasingly diverse workforce and communicate effectively with a variety of audiences from both within and beyond their organizations. This course heightens the ability of students to understand and appreciate the impact of cultural diversity on contemporary business communication.
COM 319 Business and Professional Communication
The course improves the speaking and listening skills that are essential to effective communication in a range of business and professional settings. It includes a systematic approach to informative and persuasive presentations, principles of interviewing, small-group problem solving, and oral briefings.
COM 320 Organizational Communication
The focus is on the application of communication principles to organizational contexts. Students examine communication theories within organizational frameworks, and study strategies for diagnosing communication-related problems within organizations.
COM 450 Leadership and Communication
The course provides an overview of the relationship between the principles of communication and the phenomenon of leadership. Students undertake an analysis of varied leadership approaches and their communicative content, and engage in qualitative research exploring the nature of leadership as a product of human communication.
ENG 303 Writing in Professional Fields
The goal is to enable students to develop skills for writing as professionals in workplaces (as distinct from academic settings). Students develop the skills required for writing in teams in organizational contexts and an understanding of the challenges involved. The course introduces students to empirical research about writing in the workplace. Rhetorical aims shape document preparation and design. Prerequisite: eng 106 or equivalent.
