Alumna and Art Professor to Present 'Experiences in India' Exhibition

An Elmhurst College alumna and the art professor who influenced her most will present a two-woman exhibition of their work, “Experiences in India,” at the DeKalb Area Women’s Center beginning on November 8.

“Experiences in India” features the artwork of Danielle Dobies '12 and Elmhurst College Associate Professor of Art Lynn Hill, and is inspired by their numerous visits to India and the lives of the women they met there.

During visits to educational and spiritual sites in southern India, Ajanta, Ellora and New Delhi, Dobies met women who told stories about the complexity of life there.

She was moved to design a large mosaic mural to illustrate “the contemporaneous achievements and social evils surrounding women in India.”

Hill used documentary photograph series, video interviews and participatory projects to respond as an artist to what she experienced during her travels.

“India has a hold on me that I can neither explain nor ignore,” she says. “After eight trips I struggle to reconcile the effortless potential of my life with the significant restrictions of my sisters in India. I have witnessed firsthand many of the issues that confront them.

“My trips have been organized to focus on particular challenges and some of the initiatives working to mitigate those hardships.”

The exhibit brings together work from the past few years that span several themes relating to Indian women, Hill says.

Dobies is a master of fine arts candidate at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Hill is chair of the art department at Elmhurst College.

“Experiences in India” opens Friday, November 8, at the DeKalb Area Women’s Center, 1021 State St., DeKalb, with an opening reception on November 8 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Viewing dates are November 8, 15 and 22 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. or by appointment.
