Elmhurst Honor Society Wins Award

Elmhurst College’s chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education, has received the society’s prestigious Achieving Chapter Excellence award for its accomplishments in leadership development, membership activities and programs.

The ACE award was given on October 26 at Kappa Delta Pi’s biennial convocation in Dallas.

It was the first such award for Elmhurst’s chapter, Tau Nu, which was formed in 1993. Kappa Delta Pi, established in 1911, has 600 chapters and more than 40,000 members. Membership is open to education majors who have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4-point scale.

The ACE award recognized the Elmhurst chapter for its activities and programs during the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years.

Elizabeth Kawa ’13, chapter president during the 2012-2013 academic year, said the chapter’s monthly meetings focused on professional development and often featured guest speakers and panel discussions. For example, a panel of principals discussed the hiring and interviewing process, a group of new teachers shared their experiences with students, and the College’s Center for Professional Excellence offered resume-writing advice.

Kawa, who now teaches in the Elmhurst public school system, added that the chapter also gave members the opportunity to work with children throughvolunteer opportunities at local public libraries and through Literacy Alive, an on-campus program of literacy activities for area children.

“When you are in the classroom for your observation and student teaching, you are mostly focused on the assignments you need to complete,” Kawa said. “Volunteering helps us to see children in a different light and allows us to interact on a different level. We truly get to know and understand what it is like to work with children.”

Diana Brannon, associate professor of education, was the Tau Nu Chapter’s advisor and collaborated with Kawa on submitting the application to Kappa Delta Pi for the ACE award.

Elmhurst College offers a range of education programs that are accredited by the State of Illinois and lead to Illinois teacher licensure. Programs include majors in early childhood, elementary, secondary and special education.
