Scholar of Racial Inequities Presents MLK Lecture

On Wednesday, February 12, Professor Shaun Harper spoke to an enthusiastic audience of students and community members at Elmhurst College. His lecture, We Shall Overcome … When?, was this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Intercultural Lecture.

A professor at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is director of the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education, Harper examines the enduring racial inequities in American higher education. He is the author of 10 books and more than 80 academic articles on race, gender, college access and student engagement.

His research on race and gender in education and social contexts examines topics ranging from the achievement of undergraduate men of color to college student engagement, and has been featured in publications such as The Journal of Higher Education, Review of Research in Education, Teachers College Record and The Review of Higher Education.
