Items you may bring:

  • Air popcorn popper (no exposed heating element)
  • Bedding:  extra-long twin-size sheets, blankets and pillow
  • Carpeting or rugs
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Clothes hangers
  • Coffee pot (4 cup maximum)
  • Computer, laptop, tablet
  • Electric razor
  • First aid/sewing kit
  • Flashlight
  • Footwear for rain, snow, and the like
  • Hair dryer
  • Hot pot or electric tea kettle (no exposed heating element)
  • Iron
  • Items from home to add a personal touch to your room
  • Lamp (NO Halogen bulbs)
  • Outlet strip (Your are encouraged to have an outlet strip with a surge suppressor that is approved by Underwriters Laboratories U.L.).  Elmhurst College is not responsible for damage to appliances due to power outages or surges.
  • Radio, television (cable ready), DVD (provided these items do not use an outside antenna)
  • Regrigerator (NOT to exceed 3.0 cubic feet or draw more than 1.5 amps)
  • Room fan
  • Shower supplies and sandals
  • Towels, washcloths and toiletries
  • Trash can (recycling bins are provided; trash cans are not)
  • Umbrella


Please leave the following items at home:

  • Air conditioners (window or portable/stand alone)
  • Amplified instruments and drums
  • Any item with an exposed heating element
  • Candles (not permitted even if unburned)
  • Ceiling fans
  • Drones
  • Electric blankets
  • Foam toppers for mattresses (sometimes called egg crate toppers)
  • Grills (indoor or outdoor)
  • Halogen lamps
  • Hazardous materials
  • Homemade lofts
  • Hot plates
  • Hover boards
  • Incense
  • Microwaves (permitted in apartments/houses only, one per unit)
  • Pets, except fish
  • Soldering irons
  • Space heaters
  • Toasters
  • Toaster ovens
  • Waterbeds

All of the furniture can be lofted without the use of any tools or additional materials. For diagrams or potential arrangements, please see furniture configurations.

Students residing in the Elm Park, or Prospect apartments and in College houses may want to bring a couch or comfy chairs as no living room furniture is provided.  These units have complete bedroom furniture and a kitchen table with 4 chairs.

Insurance Reminder

Elmhurst College is not responsible for damage, loss, or theft of personal possessions.  It is recommended that residents obtain renter's insurance, either through their parents' policy or through a commercial carrier.  Serial numbers of valuable possession should be recorded for insurance purposes.  Contact the Office of Residence Life for further information.
