SAFE Zone Training Sessions

SAFE Zone training was established in the Fall 1996. Elmhurst College believes that by listening, meeting, talking, and doing, we make it clear that we consider all people, regardless of sexual orientation, as equals. By forming a supportive community of students, staff, and faculty, SAFE Zone represents the importance of inclusiveness and the need to support diversity on a personal and institutional level. SAFE Zone is a growing group of Elmhurst College staff, administrators, and faculty working to encourage a culture in which people of all sexual orientations are treated equally. This training seeks to foster greater awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) issues on campus and in the larger community.

  • Awareness and Education: Explore and confront one's own assumptions, fears, and/or misconceptions about what it means to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer. Learn not to assume that everyone is heterosexual. In addition, help educate the campus community as a whole on these issues.
  • Knowledge: Develop a greater understanding of policies, laws, and practices, and how they affect gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer people.
  • Skills: Learn to challenge anti-gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and/or queer statements, jokes, and behaviors.
  • Support: Serve as a support network for all members who have dealt with any type of homophobic act. Help promote a sense of pride in oneself and others regardless of sexual orientation.
  • Action: Take steps to be an upstander, not a bystander, in co-creating a campus community where all feel welcome, supported, included and safe.

SAFE Zone believes that by listening, meeting, talking, and doing, we make it clear that we consider all people, regardless of sexual orientation, as equals. This belief forms a sense of community that includes all persons and teaches others about the importance of inclusiveness. Students, staff and faculty are able to connect on a larger scale of equality for all in the environment that SAFE Zone provides.

Individuals who have received SAFE Zone training should have a poster in their room or on their office door. SAFE Zone posters include a rainbow triangle which symbolizes pride in sexual orientation diversity.
